I got involved with Sands in 2011 shortly after the death of our son, Angus. I found out about the local group from my Dr who came to our home a few days after Angus died. While I had support from friends and family I still felt somewhat isolated and overwhelmed.
Going to my first meeting made me feel nervous but being surrounded by other bereaved parents was of comfort. They offered support I couldn’t get elsewhere.
While every story is different we all share a common thread, talking to other people who understand helped me cope with my grief. It wasn’t until 2018 that I had the time and felt I could offer support to other families so I did my befriender training. For me it is a way to give back to a wonderful organisation who helped me when I needed it the most.
