D & G Sands were only too happy to help with the creation of a memorial sculpture for stillborn babies in the Kirkcudbright area within the cemetery there. We were approached by the daughter of Margaret whose baby had been stillborn 65 years ago and had always wished there was some way of marking the area where her daughter is buried. We approached Stewartry council to ask permission to mark the area in some way and were pleasantly surprised at how accommodating they were to our request. So we set about recruiting the help of local people we knew would be able to help us fulfil our ideas.
We asked Dalbeattie artist and sculptor Lynda Burns to create something appropriate as Margaret, being an artist, had drawn what her memory of her baby was. Lynda recruited a local dry stane dyker to create a granite wall to match the existing cemetery boundary wall. Lynda also found a local plaque designer who made a beautiful slate “always loved never forgotten “plaque integrating into the granite wall.
The finished product is a magnificent memorial to all stillborn babies buried at the site and has finally brought Margaret some peace and somewhere to mark her beautiful baby daughter’s resting place.
